Counselor Corner

Thanks to everyone who responded to small group counseling and Kids' Connection group letters. We have over fifty students participating in small groups and over twenty participating in Kids' Connection groups. I'm excited to start working with these students. Groups are amazing, powerful, and FUN!

Some groups will start the end of January. Others will begin in February. If you have questions regarding any of our groups, please feel free to contact me.

Students in Kindergarten through four grade will learn about handling tough feelings like
embarrassment, frustration, and anger with Soda Pop Head and a special "explosive" demonstration during specials the first of January.

In February, students in grades two through four will explore the sixteen career families using PAWS. This activity will be a great follow up to their Career Awareness Day program in December. During this program, high school students in a variety of CTE areas presented career information including all the exciting CTE opportunities available in high school. Elementary students and their teachers were able to see first hand some of the incredible opportunities available at MVHS. A special thanks to all the CTE teachers and MVHS for working with our students to make this such an incredible event. We hope this becomes an annual event for MVISD.

PK students will continue their journey learning about feelings. We have discussed all feeling are okay. Soon we will talk about tough feelings and how to handle them. Then we will learn how to be "SUPER" friends.

Students are invited to make Valentines for Vets during the month. All valentines will be sent to the VA Hospital in Bonham, Texas to distribute to patients on Valentine's Day. This is a great opportunity for students to spread cheer and show good character. Talk to your child about other ways you can become more involved and make a positive impact in our community.

Fourth grade students will soon film another character video for school wide viewing. These students have made some amazing videos to promote our monthly character traits. I can't wait to see the next production!

The first volunteer led Kids' Connection groups are finishing up for students in KG-3rd grade. Mrs. Liz Jones, Mrs. April Ford, Miss Katie Reeves, Mrs. Susan Sample and Miss Dixie Matlock have done a fabulous job kicking off this great research based support program. All of these wonderful volunteers have agreed to return this spring to offer a second round of groups for MVES students.

Lunch Bunch, for new third grade students, had an amazing time learning about how great it is to be a Tiger! We inducted eleven new students as official "Tigers for Life". Although we will not officially meet during the spring, we have certainly made some great friendships that will continue on. Best wishes to every participant.

Fourth grade books clubs are still reading, "How To Steal A Dog" by Barbara O'Connor. These students are enjoying reading about Georgina and her adventures.  We are so thankful to Mrs. Gable for loaning us this great book and to Mrs. Ramsay for ordering us even more books to use in book club.  As soon as we finish this one, each group will choose their next book. I'm excited to see how book club membership is encouraging a love for reading.

KC P1KC P4 Kelso with Mrs. Bult and Kindergarten student.

Kelso is still around to help students be their own problem-solvers! Students in K-2 have learned about the 9 choices they have to solve small problems among friends and others. Students in 3-4 reviewed their KC Choices. Both use Kelso's Conflict Resolution program to empower children to make good choices and build self-confidence. Remember if the problem is frustrating, it's probably a small problem. Our students are strong, smart, and big enough to solve their own minor problems. For more information about these great choices and how you can help support your child, check out their Parent Page

Student's learned more about being a HERO with children's comedian, Brett Roberts. A Hero is a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities like good character. These respectful student's helped Mr. Roberts perform a little magic.

Welcome to Camp Classy Character!  This year we are charting a course towards good character. We will focus on the Six Pillars of Character, which include:

Respect (August/September)
Responsibility (October)
Caring (November/December)
Fairness/Justice (January/February)
Trustworthiness (March)
Citizenship (April/May)

In an effort to help every student become a Happy Camper, we will continue to focus on "Teaching our Tigers to R.O.A.R."

Respect Others
Obey the Rules
Accept Responsibility
Resolve Problems

With your continued help and support, I know we are going to all have an exciting year full of adventure at Mt. Vernon Elementary!
